The narrative of the man born blind’s encounter with Jesus recorded in John 9 is rich in spiritual lessons. They can be drawn from the different responses of various parties involved in this narrative.

Disciples’ response to the blind man in contrast to Jesus’ response
When Jesus saw the man who was born blind, He “responded with His heart”. In contrast, His disciples “responded with their head”. Jesus was filled with compas- sion and saw the blind man’s need but His disciples however were more interested in solving the puzzle of the cause for the man’s blindness. They wondered whether his blindness was due to his parents’ sins or his sins. Jesus’ response was that the man’s blindness was not the result of sin but the blindness was allowed so that God’s work might be displayed in his life. Jesus was also mindful that He had to grasp every opportunity to fulfil His earthly ministry when He said:” As long as it is day, we must do the work of Him who sent me … while I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (vs 4, 5). More important than giving physical sight, Jesus gave the blind man spiritual sight. Are you quick to judge others or do you seek to discern their real needs?

Blind man’s response to Jesus in contrast to the responses of his neighbours, his parents and the Pharisees
We see the blind man demonstrating growing faith as he went through various stages of identifying Jesus. When he was asked by his neighbours how his eyes were opened, he recounted how “the man they call Jesus” healed him (vs 11). Subsequently when he was interrogated by the Pharisees, his mustard seed faith grew and he called Jesus “a prophet” (vs 17). Finally when Jesus approached him a second time, he professed Jesus as Lord (vs 38). When we seek the truth, we will receive progressive revelation. Trials and opposition also present opportunities for faith to grow. When was the last time you had an encounter with Jesus? Can you honestly say you have a growing relationship with Jesus? In contrast, the Pharisees’ arrogance, self-righteousness and prejudice caused them to be blinded from knowing the truth. The neighbours’ scepticism prevented them from seeking to find out more about Jesus. The blind man’s parent’s cow- ardice also prevented them from giving God the glory. How is your prejudice, complacency, self-satisfaction, scepticism or cowardice hindering God’s revelation?
