What is the last thing one would expect to do before departing this world? Jesus set a selfless, dignified sacrificial example. He prayed for His disciples and for future believers. He showed care and concern for those who would believe Him. He knew just what lies ahead for believers after He is gone and the faith they must truly need. Such is the power of His love.
“May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me” ( Jn. 17:23).
He wanted them to be unified as a powerful witness to the reality of God’s love. Unity is important because it will make the church a positive example to the world. In a world hostile to God, such love will not only bring unbelievers to Christ, it will also keep believers strong and united. The oneness in the Triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – epitomise the unique love relationship which is the goal Christian unity should aspire to achieve.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. All men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another” (Jn. 13:34, 35).
Differences of opinion are part and parcel of the human personality. For a world that is trapped in sin, it is of little comfort to Christians if we are torn apart over divisive matters. Those who share a common faith in Christ should cooperate with one another. The church in Corinth is a hotbed of dissension and individualistic ideas. Paul in his letter used the analogy of the body being one but comprising of different parts. If a seemingly insignificant part is taken away, the whole body becomes less effective or at worse, cannot function. God sends the Holy Spirit to teach, guide and unite us in a vibrant faith, so full of love, to build up one another. All Christians are part of God’s family and thus have an equal responsibility and share in the good work. Love should be the unifying force and the identifying mark of the Christian community. Do we allow divisive issues to distract us from using our resources to further His kingdom? In BKC are we working together, helping the local body of Christ, the church to grow? Are you doing your part? In loving unity – you must!
