The Bible speaks

The woman said, “I know that Messiah (called Christ) is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you — I am He.” (John 4:25-26)

Does science explain all things? When we were in school, we learn the various principles and theories of things that happen around us. There is the story that Isaac Newton discovered the law of gravity when an apple fell on his head. However, there are people who argued that science does not “explain” things that happened but merely “describe” them. What actually caused the force to attract objects to the earth? Science cannot really explain why such a force exists. When science tries to explain the history of the universe through some big bang theory, it has overstepped its boundaries.

The birth of Jesus some 2000 years ago was the intervention of God in history. No one has ever seen God and cannot fathom how God is like. They can only imagine that God is an extension of themselves, only stronger and more powerful. “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth… No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made Him known.” (John 1:14,18)

During Jesus’ short time on earth, He lived a sinless life and showed the people of Israel the way to God. He taught the Jewish people to follow Him. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him” (John 14:6,7).

The Samaritan woman had an interesting encounter with Jesus at Jacob’s well at Sychar, in Samaria. There were also other Samaritans from the town who heard Jesus’ teachings personally and had come to believe in Him as the Saviour of the world. During the centuries that followed, we depend on the Bible that records for us the teachings of Jesus and what God wants to tell His people. Let us dig deeper into the Word of God to understand more and more what God is telling us personally and also to the church. We will then experience that when the Bible speaks we will “know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).
