Jesus – Our Ultimate Saviour

We have a deep fascination with themes of salvation and rescue. In the last 50 years alone, more than 200 Holly-wood movies feature an apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic setting. Some of us may remember cult classics such as Planet of the Apes. Others may think of more recent films such as The Hunger Games. All these movies tell the story of a hero-survivor who escapes danger, fights evil, and saves the day (to varying degrees).

In 2 Peter 2:4-9, the Apostle Peter also describes three apocalyptic scenes, ending in chains, water, or fire. We start in the heavenly realms, where the angels who sinned were cast into hell and chained until the Day of Judgment. We progress to the earthly realm where a flood destroyed the ungodly ancient world and only Noah and his family were saved. The third story was set on earth as well, but limited to Sodom and Gomorrah, which were turned to ashes because of their wickedness, and only Lot and family (minus wife) were rescued. Three apocalyptic scenes of destruction, and in two of them, a remnant was saved.

Are these just movies or Biblical accounts without any impact on “real life”? Definitely NO!

These apocalyptic stories resonate with us because they reflect an underlying reality that we are created for. The apocalypse is not confined to the movies or historical events in the Bible – there is a coming Day of Judgment. Then, a dividing line will be drawn between the godly and the unrighteous. As the Apostle Peter said: “The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the Day of Judgment” (2 Pet 2:9).

As Christians, we want to be part of the godly remnant that is saved. Unlike the movies, however, we do not have to depend on our own luck, skill or effort to save ourselves. One person, Jesus, has paid the price. He was the supreme sacrifice that saved our sin sick world. He took destruction and death upon Himself that those who believe in Him might cross over from eternal death to eternal life. Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life” (Jn 5:24). Jesus is our ultimate Saviour. Praise be to God for this indescribable gift!
