God's Purpose For Us

We don’t use a table tennis bat to play badminton. Why? That is not what it was made for. So why do we use ourselves for purposes we were not made for?

Some useful verses in the Bible which help us to know and understand God’s purpose for us on earth are as follows:
“So God created man in His own image” (Gen 1:27). We are created in God’s image so that we can have fellowship with Him.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’” (Matt 22:37-39).

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph 2:10).

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matt 28:19-20).

Our Lord Jesus Christ clearly sets the example when He says in John 4:34 that His food is to do the will of the One who sent Him. He also says in John 5:30 that He seeks to please not Himself but God who sent Him. Jesus’ preoccupation is always God. What is your preoccupation? It must always be to please God!

At the age of twelve, Jesus knew He had to be at His Father’s house (Luke 2:49). Even at this young age, He knew God’s purpose for His life and He submitted to God’s timing before He started His public ministry. Let us not wait till we hit mid-life crisis or face a life threatening situation before we start thinking about our purpose on earth. Let us also not wait till we think we are done with what we want to achieve in life before we start thinking about what God wants us to do.

Jesus spent much time in secret with God. He often retreated to pray. Do you keep your regular quiet moments with God? Do you commune with Him constantly? If not, how will you feel His heartbeat and know His purpose for you? We must maintain an eternal perspective in our lives. Our focus is to be on Jesus – the Author of our faith. We will then align ourselves with God’s purpose for us.
